Whale fall

The suspended aquarium is called

and is lightly filled with murky pink water, gently rocking back and forth, pulled by a fishing string driven by a turning motor attached to a built wall. I tried to lure the viewer around the corner. The aquarium, up in the air, has images engraved into the glass walls of a crying baby opposite to a yawing girl, and a swimming dog opposite to a performing dolphin. I made it rock so it would try to calm these images down, making the pink murky water move satisfyingly.

This Installation is based on a `whalefall ́ that feeds the bottom of the ocean. One whale can sustain life for 200 years. Inspired by this I wanted to create an ecology of disregarded stuff. In the center, I placed a collapsed aquarium. I found it on Marktplaats; the seller told me it had housed a single goldfish for 10 years. She asked what fish I would get, and I said I wouldn’t use it for domestication but for art. She seemed a bit disappointed.
